Read through each chapter.
Ask God to show you what you need to see.
Discuss anything that seems interesting and see where it takes you.
As you read each new chapter, look for common themes, and also discuss how it relates to the others.

And finally ask yourself, “So what?”
Was this just some interesting information? Or is it life changing?
What are you going to do differently from now on?
What choices are you going to need to change?
How is this study going to influence your lifestyle?

How is your battle against sin, trying to rid the new life you have in Yeshua of the past sins which ruled in your body?
What can you learn from these battles to help you fight your old habits, your old sins and rid yourself of them once and for all?

In chapter 6 we read of the first battle. The defeat of Jericho. It’s quite a well known story.
How did marching around Jericho blasting trumpets every day for a week, and then the walls falling down show that it was Yahweh who defeated Jericho, not the soldiers?
How is that like your life when you first became a Christian? Did things suddenly change? Was that your own will power, or did you somehow know that Yeshua was doing something in your life?

In chapter 7 we read how they moved on to the next city, Ai.
But somehow they thought they had defeated Jericho, and they thought Ai wasn’t well protected. So they just sent a small force to go against Ai.
How did that go for them?
Have you ever fallen for that trap? Have you tried to defeat sin in your own power? And even then, not really trying very hard, thinking it wouldn’t be difficult. Underestimating what it takes to stop sinning.
“Being strong”, “resolving to never do that again”, … how did that go? How long was it before you did it again?

How did the Israelites finally defeat Ai?
What had they done wrong which made Yahweh not give them easy victory again?
Have you done that? Have you taken things into your life which should have been given to Yahweh?
Things the world values, because you want them for yourself. Basically they stole from Yahweh! You have to admit, that’s pretty dumb.
Is there anything in your life which should have been given to Yeshua? Have you kept something you should have given him? Something which is rightfully his?
If you’re giving 10% but everything you have is his, are you giving 10% or are you keeping 90%?
Which are you going to do? How are you going to fix it?
Presumably your church won’t stone you. (But that’s how seriously Yahweh takes this).

In chapter 8 Yahweh sends them against Ai again.
How is it different?
What do you think of the plan? Make it look like it’s not all of us, get them to chase us, and then kill them all.
How can you apply that to a sin in your life?
Some sin needs everything you’ve got to kill it off. And it needs Yahweh telling you it’s time to kill it. That he’s with you in this battle.
How does killing every enemy soldier related to your battle with sin?
Are you doing that? Or do you leave a few alive who come back to bother you again?
Do you give Yahweh the credit?

In chapter 9 we see Israel losing a battle before they even realised they needed to fight it.
Some kings deceived them and gained a treaty before they were attacked.
Israel was bound by the treaty. That showed incredible integrity, honouring the deal they agreed to even though they were tricked into it. Would you have honoured it? Or just killed them all anyway?
Have you done that with any sin? Have you done a deal, thinking that’s not such a bad sin, or nothing to worry about, or not even sinful?
How can you get out of that?
How does this chapter relate to things like sex outside of marriage, or homosexuality?
How does it relate to greed? Or pride? Or the love of money?
What lesson can you learn from this chapter, and how can you apply it to fighting your own sins?
What sin do you have to confront and call it what it is?

In chapter 10 several other kings gathered together to fight them.
They attacked the Gibeonites, (who had deceived Joshua into making the treaty), and the Israelites went out to defend them.
But what did Yahweh have to say about this?
And how did that work out?
Are there any sins you need to battle which come in groups?
Like if you go out partying or drinking, and end up doing drugs or sleeping around?
The only way forward is to kill them all in one go. But you can do it because Yahweh has given them into your hand.
What is your way forward? What do you have to do to stop them all?
Can you imagine what it was like for them to see the sun standing still, to see a day which lasted two!
You know God is on your side when stuff like that happens!
And for complex sins like this, he is on your side.
What “sign” can he give you to show you that and to encourage you to fight them all in one go, knowing for sure that you will win?
How many times in the book of Joshua do we see that “catchphrase”, “Be strong and courageous”?
How does “Be strong and courageous” apply to you? Where are you being weak or cowardly?
How ruthless were the Israelites? How ruthless are you in your battle against sin?

In chapter 11 the remaining kings of the land have a bit of a panic. They realise that one by one they will be wiped out by Israel.
So they all join forces and have one last go at defeating Israel together.
How would you feel if Yahweh said to you, “Don’t be afraid, by this time tomorrow you will have killed them all”? They will never bother you again.
How would you feel if Yahweh said to you, “Don’t be afraid, by this time tomorrow your sins will all be dead and never bother you again”?
Is it armies who win wars? Or the will of Yahweh?
So why is it your strength who defeats sin? And not the will of Yahweh?
So how do you defeat sin? Pray for Yahweh to rule it so?
(How do you succeed at anything really? Pray for Yahweh to rule it so?)

What was the key to Joshua’s success?
How did that relate to Yahweh and Moses?
Have you discipled anyone? Did they do what you taught them?

How did it work for the Israelites when they ignored Yahweh and did it their own way?
How did it work for them when they did exactly, and only, what Yahweh had told them to do?
What do you have to change in the way you do things?
What’s it going to take for you to have rest from sin?
