For if the blood of bulls and goats, and ashes of a heifer, sprinkling those who’ve been made common makes them holy for the cleansing of the flesh, how much more then will the blood of the Anointed, who through the everlasting spirit presented himself blameless to God, cleanse your conscience.

Throughout the Bible, any covenant between God and man requires blood.

Right from the start, when God covered over Adam and Eve’s sin by giving them animal skins to wear.
Animals died for that. Animals shed blood. So that man’s sin could be covered and God could tolerate the sight of us again.

After the flood Noah sacrificed some of the clean animals from the ark. (I guess that’s why he only had two of all the others but seven pairs of the clean breeds). And Yahweh swore to never again strike the ground and every living thing as he had just done.
(Lucky for us or we’d all be trying to survive underwater).

Yahweh confirmed his covenant with Abraham to give him the land of Israel by walking between two halves of sacrificed animals.
And even circumcision, a sign given to Abraham, that the male was a Jew, one of Yahweh’s people, required blood to be shed.

Moshe sprinkled blood on the altar and even on the people to confirm their agreement to follow all the words of Yahweh spoken to Moshe on the mountain.

And then Yahweh covenanted with David to establish his kingdom forever. Part of that was the building of the temple. Which had to be continually cleansed by blood sacrifices.

And finally Yeshua. The ultimate covenant between Yahweh and mankind.
You trust in my son’s sacrifice and all your sins will not just be covered over so I can tolerate you, they will be washed away completely so I can accept you into my family. Forever.

Yeshua sacrificed his life for us. Not just the blood of animals, not even just the blood of another human, but the blood of the one and only son of God!
For you. For me!

His blood was shed too. When they whipped him, when they nailed him up, when they stabbed him in the side.
His life was sacrificed too. By choice.

His blood for your life. His life for yours. Your eternal life.

Animal sacrifice just wasn’t enough. That could cover over our sins enough for Yahweh to tolerate us, but not wash them away so it was like we never sinned, enough that Yahweh could grant us permission to enter his presence and to live there forever.

Only one sacrifice was ever able to do that. His own son. Yeshua.
