I am confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus

Philippians 1:6 “I am confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
I’m sure you’ve heard this verse before. And you might have heard sermons or inspirational talks or articles about it. Talking about how God is working in you and will continue to do so.

Now, that might be true, and I hope for your sake it is.
But that verse does NOT say that.
In Philippians 1:6 the “you” is plural. It means more than one of you. It’s what you say when you’re talking or writing to a group of people and you say “you” meaning all of them.
So in fact, “in you” is NOT a valid translation of that Greek sentence. It means “among you (all)”.

The Little Watchman Translation of this verse is “I have confidence in this, that the one who began a good work among you will keep performing it until the day of Anointed Yeshua.”

The work was being done among the Philippians. Just as it is being done among your church now.
So much of the New Testament is about God working among churches. The church is the body of Yeshua, so this makes perfect sense. God is building the body of Yeshua to enable it to do the work he has given it. To represent his son on Earth, to take the message and salvation of his son to the world around them.

Very little of the New Testament is about you working as an individual to do anything for him. You are meant to be part of a team, not an individual player.
It is our modern Western mindset that me as an individual is important. But you’re not.
I’m not. We’re part of a body. You need to wake up to the right way of thinking about this.
Pray that God will gift the body which is your church, with whatever it needs to fulfil its mission, and that you will know what part of that body you are supposed to be. Pray that you will be the best you can be at being that part.
And all of you, only ever work together, as God does his good work among you.
