Witness, not Salesman

READING
Acts 1
Isaiah 43

“You’ll receive power when the holy spirit has come upon you, and you’ll be witnesses to me in both Jerusalem, and in all of Judea and Samaria, and to the limits of the earth.”

Not everyone is meant to be an evangelist. That is only a role for those who have that gift of the Spirit.
But we are all called to be witnesses.

Think of it like a court of law… if you were called to be a witness to something the court wants to hear about.
You would just tell the judge what you saw, and what you experienced for yourself. Nothing more.
And it is the same here.
As a witness you can, and should, tell others what you have seen of Yeshua, of the church, of faith, of miracles…
And you can tell others what life has been like for you since you became a Christian. What life with Yeshua has been like for you.

John Mark Comer in his book “Practicing the Way” makes a really good point on this. One which would help most anxious Christians overcome their fear of being a witness.
He says, “We’re witnesses, not salesmen”.
You need to tell people what it’s been like for you, but you don’t need to sell it.
You don’t need to be a salesman, who has some special technique for landing the sale.
You don’t need to try to coerce the other person into becoming a Christian on the spot.
That is up to the Holy Spirit. Not you.

We just need to have a coffee with a friend and tell them about your life.

We’re not responsible for the outcome. We’re not responsible for their reaction.
No more than a witness in a courtroom trial is responsible for the outcome of the trial.
They are only there to tell what they have seen with their own eyes and experienced in their own lives.

You could do that.

If you want to practice, then write it up and email it to me.
It’s free. It’s completely confidential, nobody else will see it. And if you want, I’ll be happy to give you feedback on it. Or just talk it over as if we were just two Christians getting to know each other. As we are!
Honestly, why not mail me and witness to me about your life as a Christian.

Sit down with a coffee or your drink of choice, and imagine we just met for the first time, and you’re explaining who you are, where you’ve been, what you’ve been doing, what your church is like. What difference having Yeshua in your life has made?

Or just write it up in a text editing app for yourself.
And print it out and read it, as if you were meeting yourself for the first time.
Or just save it away. Read it whenever you’re feeling down.

You can do it. You’re (re)born for it.

And the other point is that when Yeshua said “you will be witnesses to me”… the you was plural.
He was talking to them as a group. As a group they are witnesses to the world around them of who Yeshua is, what Yeshua has done, what he is like?
The church as a group needs to be doing this. In fact, I think to some extent we are doing this, whether we like it or not.
The church is a witness to the world of what Yeshua is like. Because they’re watching us, and making their decisions about him based on what they see in us. We might not always be the best witnesses, but we are witnesses for sure.

What can we do as a group to make that testimony better? More reflective of who Yeshua really is? A more powerful statement about what he has done for us? A better demonstration of what Yeshua is really like?

Stop worrying about how you’re going to sell your message, and just stand up and be willing to be a witness.
Be willing to be asked questions, and just answer how you feel, and how things really are for you.
Remember you don’t have to be a salesman, you just have to tell the truth.

I’m looking forward to your mail.
