What’s it Going to Take?

In Amos 4 & 5 we read about Yahweh lamenting over his people. About all the things he’s tried to do to get their attention back, and for them to return to him. As his people. But they continue in their rebellion and their sin.

He tried starving them of food. Nope.
He tried drought. Nope.
He tried letting one city have rain but another city have none. Nope.
He struck them with blight and mildew, and locusts. Nope.
He sent plagues, like those he inflicted on Egypt when they wouldn’t let his people go. Nope.
He sent war which killed their young men. Nope.
He personally destroyed some of them, like Sodom and Gomorrah. Nope.

Now he’s about to wipe out 90% of them.
They say, “We desire the day of Yahweh”. Really?

”Why would you have the day of Yahweh? It is darkness, and not light, as if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him, or went into the house and leaned his hand against the wall, and a serpent bit him. Is not the day of Yahweh darkness, and not light, and gloom with no brightness in it?”

Yahweh is trying all these things to get his people to come back to him.

By the way, how about you?
Is he trying to get your attention? Hopefully he already has it big time.
But if not, what will it take before you finally turn back to him?

Has anything “bad” ever happen to you? Was that Yahweh trying to get your attention?
What did you do about it? Did it work?

And how about your country? Is Yahweh trying to get your country’s attention so they will turn back to him?
Like the USA and Australia, was your country also once thought of as Christian?
How about now?

What would it take for Yahweh to get the attention again in your country?
What do your fellow countrymen love more than Yahweh?
If you were Yahweh, what disaster would you bring on them?
Poverty? Floods? Fires? Crime? War? Earthquakes? Drought? Disease?
All the above?
What would rock your country so much that they would repent and turn back to God?
Nothing? As in, they’re so far gone, nothing could do it.

What are you, personally, willing to do about that?

2 Chronicles 7 has a famous verse…
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

You willing to be the first on in your country to do that?

You willing to follow Daniel’s example and fast and pray in sackcloth for your country?
To really humble yourself before Yahweh on behalf of your entire, sinful, country?

Or you just care about yourself?
And as long as you’re OK, you just want the day of Yahweh to come?
